I Wonder: Self-interviews Under Lockdown

Celia, 10 year old, Granada (Spain). I Wonder #4, Self-interviews Under Lockdown

Ellen Duthie

“[I am worried that] all the people who are ill and fighting to survive the virus won’t make it and that the doctors who are attending to them might also get sick.”

In our fourth (Self) Interview Under Lockdown, 10-year old Celia from Granada got her sister Ángela to ask the questions rather than strictly self-interviewing (which we love too!).

In this great interview which they have presented beautifully in the image (click on the image below to download the original PDF file in Spanish or read the translation into English), Ángela asks Celia about the experience of doing school at home (and how it could be improved), what worries her about the crisis and what helps her cope with the situation, among other questions.

CELIA’S LIFE UNDER LOCKDOWN DUE TO THE CORONAVIRUS

HELLO

I am Celia García Alix García, a 10-year-old girl from Granada. I am in Primary 5 in Spain (equivalent to Year 6 in the UK) and I like playing the piano, singing and painting. My sister Angela is 16 years old, she’s in 4th year of ESO (equivalent to Year 11 in the UK) and she likes dancing and meeting up with her friends.

WHAT’S IT LIKE TO HAVE SCHOOL AT HOME?

It’s OK, although we miss our friends.

HOW DO YOU THINK IT COULD BE IMPROVED?

I think teachers should not think that we don’t have anything to do and give us loads of schoolwork because we can also do other things besides doing schoolwork, such as baking and doing exercise.

WHAT DO YOU THINK THEY’VE GOT RIGHT AT HOME?

My parents have everything I need for me to do the schoolwork I am sent, but eventually we’ll run out of things and we won’t be able to go and buy more because you can only buy essential goods.

DO YOU THINK THE MEASURES THAT ARE BEING TAKEN ARE FAIR?

I think the lockdown is not at all bad, because we can learn how to do new things, but hospitals are overwhelmed, and we have to try to do everything possible not to leave the house.

WHAT HELPS YOU COPE WITH THE SITUATION?

Not thinking about what’s happening outside and trying to think that everything is going to be OK.

WHAT WORRIES YOU ABOUT THE CURRENT SITUATION?

I’m worried that the people who are ill and fighting to survive the virus won’t make it and that the doctors who are attending to them also get sick.

WHAT ARE YOU WORRIED ABOUT IN PARTICULAR?

That we might not actually manage to stop the virus and the pandemic continues to spread.

HOW LONG DO YOU THINK WE’RE GOING TO BE UNDER LOCKDOWN?

Quite a long time, because even though during these Easter holidays the number of new cases and the death rate is going down, it’s still going to be longer.

I Wonder, Self-interviews Under Lockdown is a project by Wonder Ponder inviting 5 to 18 year olds to ask questions and think about the coronavirus crisis and its consequences through self-interviews in audio, written or ilustrated format.

If you want to send a self-interview for us to include it in the project, please read this entry and follow these instructions.

We look forward to hearing from you!

You can see/read/listen to other self-interviews here.
